Once Is Enough

I have literally lost count of the number of times I've commented, on this website, on so–called "quotations" that cannot be verified – which means that they're probably misattributed (and that's putting it politely).

This one is typical. It's all over the Internet, in the usual places: brainyquote, goodreads, azquotes, quotes.net. But none of these sites ever makes any attempt to say when anything was said or written. You have to assume they don't care.

Like most so–called quotations that you'll find on any one of those websites, this one isn't listed by any reliable source. Wikiquote has over 20 Mae West quotes, but this isn't one of them; the Oxford Book of Modern Quotations has 16, but they don't include this one. I couldn't find anything about it on the Quote Investigator either.

Please, please, please: if you want to set a Quotations question, pick one from a reliable source. Don't insult our intelligences with rubbish like this.
